For the past few years, I have been searching for a medium to combine with my photography. In January of 2021, I stepped out of my comfort zone and took an online photo encaustic workshop with Fine Artist/Photographer Leah Macdonald and embraced the process! It gave me the hands on approach and tactile feel I like while creating, as well as marrying my love of painting and photography.

Encaustic painting uses heated beeswax combined with resin. It can be used on its own to paint an image or poured over a photograph or a collage which was glued to a wooden panel. The heated wax is colored with encaustic paint sticks, powdered pigments or even natural ingredients like spices. Each layer can be scraped back to reveal parts of the piece as well as incised with various tools, then fused with heat before adding another layer. Encaustic pigment sticks, which contain linseed oil, are generally applied to the final coat of wax as an option to provide further enhance the piece with a painterly feel. The results in a soft-focused piece that both conceals and reveals parts of the image. It's an experimental and unpredictable process that makes each piece unique, even if the same photograph is used twice. Working with encaustics takes trial and error, along with patience, to get certain results.
